What are raised beds kits?
Raised beds are planting areas that are constructed above the ground level and are typically surrounded by a frame or border. They vary in size and can be made from a variety of materials, including stone plastic or, like ours, wood.
Raised bed kits are pre-packaged sets containing all the necessary components to build a raised garden bed. Ours comprise pre-cut wooden panels, stainless steel fittings, fixing screws and clear instructions, allowing you to quickly create a tidy, organised space for your plants to thrive.
Benefits of raised bed kits
Raised bed kits are incredibly useful for gardening because they offer numerous benefits over traditional ground-level gardening.
Improved soil quality
Raised beds can be filled with high-quality soil, which is better suited for your plants than the soil found in your garden.
Better drainage
The elevated design of raised beds prevents waterlogging and promotes healthy root growth.
Easier access
Raised beds make it easier to plant, tend to and harvest your plants without having to bend down or kneel on the ground. So ideal for gardeners with mobility problems.
Custom layout
By combining different sizes and shapes of beds, raised bed kits give you the flexibility to create your ideal garden layout
Pest control
The height of raised beds can help deter some garden pests, such as slugs and snails.
Soil Protection
As the soil in your raised bed will never be walked on or compacted, it will protect the growing environment of your plants.

How to choose your raised bed kit
When selecting the perfect raised bed kit for your garden, consider the following factors:
Size of the area
Measure your garden space and choose a raised bed kit that fits comfortably within the area, leaving enough space for walking and other activities.
Types of plants being grown
Consider the size and growth habits of the plants you plan to grow, and select a kit that provides adequate space for their roots and foliage.
Available sunlight
Ensure that your chosen location receives enough sunlight for your plants to thrive. Without the soil, some raised bed kits can be easily moved if needed, allowing you to adjust their position to make the most of the available sunlight.
Using a raised bed kit with our cold frames
One of the unique benefits of our raised bed kits is their compatibility with our range of cold frames.
Simply place one of our cold frames into your raised bed kit for added space and protection for your plants. Using a wooden raised bed in combination with a cold frame also allows for early cropping.
Construction
Manufactured in the UK, our raised bed kits use sustainably sourced timber which complies with RHS timber policies. The wooden boards are pre-cut, pre-drilled, sanded and pressure treated for a long life.
A choice of sizes are available, from 2ft x 4ft raised bed kits for smaller spaces, right up to our largest 8ft x 4ft raised bed kit for bigger projects. When it comes to height, you can choose between one and five tiers.
Care and maintenance
To ensure your raised bed kits remain in excellent condition, follow these care and maintenance tips:
Adding or removing soil
Periodically check the soil level in your raised beds and top up or remove soil as needed to maintain the ideal depth for your plants.
Watering
Use a watering can or hose to water your plants, ensuring they receive adequate moisture without over-watering.
Fertilising
Add fertiliser according to the specific requirements of your plants, either by incorporating it into the soil or applying it as a top dressing.
Pest and disease protection
Regularly inspect your raised beds for signs of pests and diseases, and take appropriate action to prevent or treat any issues.
What to plant in your raised bed
Raised beds are suitable for a wide variety of plants, including vegetables, fruits, flowers and herbs. Some popular choices for raised bed gardening include:
- Salad greens, such as lettuce, spinach and kale.
- Root vegetables, like carrots, beetroot and parsnips
- Tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers
- Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries
- Herbs, including basil, parsley and mint
- Flowers, such as marigolds, zinnias and nasturtiums
Remember to choose plants for your raised bed kit that are well-suited to the local climate and soil conditions, and consider companion planting techniques to promote healthy plant growth and deter pests.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I put at the bottom of a raised bed?
You can place a layer of crushed stones, gravel or even a weed barrier fabric at the bottom of your raised bed to improve drainage and prevent weeds from growing.
Should I line my raised bed?
The use of an impermeable material, like plastic, to line your raised bed is not recommended. Especially in hot, humid weather, water can easily become trapped between the plastic and the wood, hastening the process of decay and preventing the soil from draining properly.
What soil do I use for a raised bed?
Although garden soil can be used, the best option is to use a high-quality, well-draining soil mix designed especially for raised beds. This usually includes a blend of topsoil, compost and other organic materials to provide the ideal growing conditions for your plants.

Where can I buy raised bed soil?
You can easily purchase raised bed soil from a garden centre, nursery or online retailers. Many suppliers offer delivery services, making it easy to have the soil delivered directly to your home.
Why is wood a good material for raised beds?
Wood is a popular choice for raised beds because it’s natural, affordable and easy to work with. It also provides good insulation for plant roots.
How much soil will I need to fill my raised bed kit?
The amount of soil needed obviously depends on the size of your raised bed. To calculate the volume of soil required, multiply the length, width and depth of the bed in metres, then divide by 1,000 to give the amount of compost in litres.
For example, 1.89m x 1.27m x 0.35m x 1000 = 840 litres. Bulk bags of up to 1,000 litres can be purchased.
Do I need to add fertiliser to my raised bed?
Yes, adding fertiliser to your raised bed will help provide your plants with the essential nutrients they need to grow strong and healthy.
The best fertiliser for your raised bed depends on the plants you’re growing and the existing nutrient levels in your soil. A balanced, slow-release organic fertiliser is generally a good choice for most raised beds.
How do I water my plants in a raised bed?
Water your plants using a watering can, a hose with a gentle spray attachment or a drip irrigation system. Be sure to water deeply and evenly, ensuring that the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged.
How often should I water a raised bed?
The frequency of watering will depend on the weather, your soil type and the needs of your plants. Check the soil moisture regularly and water when the top few centimetres feel dry to the touch.
How do I prevent pests and diseases?
As prevention is better than cure, the best way to avoid pests and diseases in your raised bed is to monitor it on a regular basis. Physical barriers, organic deterrents, beneficial insects and companion planting can all be used to overcome any problems you may find.
Can raised bed kits be used on a balcony?
Provided there is adequate space, drainage and available sunlight, raised bed kits can be used on a balcony. But do keep in mind the weight capacity of your balcony and ensure that the combined weight of the raised bed, soil, plants and water does not exceed it.
