Health Benefits of Turmeric Tea
Golden Milk, also sometimes called Turmeric Tea, is a warm beverage filled with health benefits. The star of the show is turmeric. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory effects (source). Inflammation is linked to numerous health conditions and diseases, so everyone should be diligent to keep it at bay in their bodies.
Turmeric also has antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, and antimutagenic properties. (source) This superstar may also ease symptoms of depression naturally, relieve arthritis pain, and build your heart health (source). With all those health benefits, you would be crazy not to give this a try!
I find I crave a warm drink in the afternoon, so Golden Milk has been a perfect healthful beverage to satisfy that craving while delivering powerful health benefits.
To make Golden Milk Turmeric Tea, first you need to have turmeric paste on hand. This takes five minutes to make and then you can have it on hand in the refrigerator. It will last about two weeks refrigerated. Turmeric powder is mixed with water and black pepper to make a paste. The black pepper is important as it increased the absorption of the turmeric. It won’t do us any good if our bodies can’t absorb it, right?
The Golden Milk Turmeric Tea recipe is also super easy to whip up. I add a little sweetener (either raw honey or stevia) and some ground ginger, ground cinnamon, and pure vanilla extract. The taste? AMAZING. I love this stuff. Trust me, it doesn’t taste like you are drinking a stir-fry. (That’s what I think of when I think of turmeric.)

Turmeric also boosts immunity levels. Its anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties protect us from a variety of infections. Many doctors highly recommend taking a teaspoon full of turmeric in a glass of warm milk every day to keep the common cold and flu at bay.
People who should not take turmeric include those with gallbladder problems, bleeding disorders, diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), infertility, iron deficiency, liver disease, hormone-sensitive conditions, and arrhythmia. Pregnant women and those who are going to undergo surgery should not use turmeric.
Previous studies have also found that turmeric or curcumin may improve markers of cardiovascular health in people at risk for CVD, such as their cholesterol levels and C-reactive protein.
Individuals can consume turmeric milk at any point in the day either before starting their day or before going to bed. Turmeric milk benefits at night include a better sleep cycle which may help individuals with insomnia. If you want a remedy for weight management and insomnia you can consume it at night.
In fact it is said that turmeric can help you lose weight too. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties and anti-obesity potential of turmeric that can help cut the bulge in a healthy way.
Turmeric is a good remedy for keeping influenza, common cold and other such viruses at bay. Additionally, milk too is known to be effective in treating throat infections. A combination of both is rich in antioxidants and is amazing for preventing cold. Turmeric has detoxifying and hepatoprotective properties.
In ancient times in the Far East, turmeric was used to treat inflammatory conditions of various organs, for liver and digestive tract problems, and on wound healing.
Curcumin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms that help with various health issues, including heart conditions, liver disease, and certain inflammation-related chronic diseases. ² However, high doses of this ingredient could be harmful to your kidneys and lead to the formation of kidney stones.
Avoid using turmeric together with other herbal/health supplements that can also affect blood-clotting. This includes angelica (dong quai), capsicum, clove, dandelion, danshen, evening primrose, garlic, ginger, ginkgo, horse chestnut, Panax ginseng, poplar, red clover, saw palmetto, and willow.
Mix together ¼ to ½ teaspoon of dried, powdered turmeric with 1¼ cup of water. Add ⅛ teaspoon black pepper and ½ teaspoon ghee or cold pressed oil like extra virgin coconut oil, olive oil or avocado, depending on your diet. If you want you can also add the ghee/oil later just before straining the tea.
All you need to do is to take a saucepan and add water to it. Add a dash of turmeric and ginger to the water and bring it to a boil. Once boiled, turn off the heat and let it cool to room temperature. Drink the tea daily to see effective results.
Turmeric contains oxalates and this can increase the risk of kidneys stones. “The consumption of supplemental doses of turmeric can significantly increase urinary oxalate levels, thereby increasing risk of kidney stone formation in susceptible individuals.”
However, once you've gone through a loading period, that's when you will start to notice some of the proposed benefits. So, how long does it take turmeric to work? Depending on your body mass and condition, it will usually take around 4-8 weeks for you to start noticing improvements to your body and mind.
The amount of turmeric tea you can drink daily depends on individual factors like tolerability and personal preference. For most people, a moderate intake of 1 or 2 cups per day can offer turmeric's benefits without a high risk of side effects.
The recommended daily dose varies widely (100 to >1,000 mg daily), depending on the preparation used (curcuminoids vs turmeric extract), formulation (tablets, liquid, root extract, tea) and indications. Side effects are uncommon and mild but may include dermatitis and gastrointestinal upset.
