Instant Pot Orange Mulled Wine | Glühwein Recipe - Recipes From A Pantry (1)

Christmas is *kinda* coming (any excuse peeps, any excuse), which means drinks like Instant Pot Mulled Wine are now on the menu. This traditional Glühwein aka a German drink is a well-loved staple served over the festive holiday and throughout winter especially at Christmas Market stalls.

And nothing beats the cozy smell of spiced mulled wine, so even more reason to make it. And friends, it could not be easier to make.

It is simply a case of putting all the wine, orange juice and mulling spices in the Instant Pot and letting it simmer. A few mins later and out comes a rather delicious and more-ish German Glühwein.

Want to make it adults-only? Then add in some rum at the end. Even better is that the Pressure Cooker will keep the mulled wine warm till you are ready to serve (if you can wait for longer than 5 mins, you are stronger than me……).

FAQs

What Wine To Use For Glühwein?

You can make your Glühwein with pretty much any red wine you want. However, this is best made with everyday and more inexpensive wines. Those lovely and more expensive bottles of wine are much better kept for a special or "I just want a good bottle of wine" occasion.

Even better, use those bottle of red wine that you were gifted and did not like - since the lovely flavor of the spices and citrus will really transform your wine.

How to make gluhwein in instant pot? ›

Why does my mulled wine taste bitter? ›

'I'm not sure there's an 'ultimate' recipe – it's a question of personal taste,' said Fiona Beckett in Decanter magazine in 2015, who shares her own recipe for mulled wine below. 'Remember not to boil the liquid at any point, otherwise you'll burn off the alcohol and make your mulled wine taste bitter.

If you want to make mulled wine for a bigger crowd then opt for boxed wine. The quality of boxed wine today is seriously impressive and often more budget-friendly than buying individual bottles.

What is the best wine for mulled wine? ›

The best red wine to use for mulled wine is Merlot, Zinfandel or Garnacha (also called Grenache). These wines are dark, fruity and full bodied, which means they can support all of the flavors we'll be adding. Look for labels that describe the wine as “jammy” or with “notes of vanilla.”

Does alcohol cook off in Instant Pot? ›

And if you are concerned that the alcohol will not “cook off” or evaporate in the Instant Pot, you are correct. If that is a concern, add the wine when using the Sauté function and allow the liquid to boil with the lid off for a minute or two before closing the lid and using the pressure cook function.

Why has my mulled wine gone fizzy? ›

Either some carbon dioxide was trapped inside when the wine was bottled, or the wine started to re-ferment while in the bottle, and the bubbles are a byproduct. A little fizz won't make you sick, but I find it unpleasant, and it usually comes with a yeasty stink.

Star Anise

Star anise is available both in pod or ground form. It is especially great as a 1:1 replacement for cloves when combined with other spices like cinnamon and nutmeg.
