The film was the brainchild of screenwriter Eric Heisserer conceived in order to popularize the works of Ted Chiang. Arrival is based on the Nebula-winning 1998 science fiction novella "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang. The novella involves Earth's first communication with heptapods who speak in a cryptic language.

The movie intentionally keeps the Mandarin lines untranslated to focus on General Shang's reaction, making it more powerful. Shang's wife's dying words, "In war, there are no winners, only widows," highlight the devastating consequences of war and the importance of communication in defusing conflicts.
