Easy Recipes for Making Hot Chocolate on a Camping Road Trip (1) February Outdoor Living Newsletter

If there's one drink anyone's up for having, at any time and in any weather, its hot chocolate. No matter what your age, sipping on a warm mug of hot chocolate gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling. Somehow, suddenly, the world is alright. RVers are as vulnerable to the lures of hot chocolate as anyone else. However, as many RVers are often on the go they may not always have the time to brew the perfect blend while on the road. Here are some recipes to make hot chocolate on the go.

Let's start with the classic recipe, for when the RVer has ample time on his hands, such as when pulled up at a beautiful RV park on a rainy day.

Hot Chocolate

Cook Time: 5 minutes
Serves: 4-5 people

  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 4 ounces milk chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon instant espresso or coffee powder
  • 4 to 5 vanilla beans or cinnamon sticks, for garnish
  1. Heat the milk and half-and-half in a saucepan on medium heat to just below the simmering point.
  2. Remove the pan from the heat and add both chocolates.
  3. When the chocolates have melted, add the sugar, vanilla extract, and espresso and whisk vigorously. Reheat gently and serve immediately.
  4. Use a vanilla bean or cinnamon stick to garnish each serving.

When an RVer is pressed for time but is craving that cup of chocolate, you could prepare this cocoa mix in advance and use it to make yourself an instant hot chocolate. These mixes can also be carried when camping in the wilderness with few cooking tools at hand.

Hot Cocoa Mix

Cook Time: 5 minutes
Serves: 4 people

  • 2 cups nonfat dry milk powder
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/2 cup mini semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup powdered nondairy creamer
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  1. Measure all of the ingredients into a mixing bowl and whisk them until they are evenly blended.
  2. Store the mix in a tightly covered container at room temperature until you're ready to package it.
  3. When ready to use, spoon 3 or 4 generous tablespoons of cocoa mix into your cup (depending on the size), add boiling water, and stir well.
  4. Voila, instant yummy hot chocolate anyone?

To make life even simpler, here's another Hot Chocolate Mix, similar, albeit with fewer ingredients.

Hot Chocolate Mix

Cook Time: 12 minutes
Serves: 3-4 people

  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
  • 1 cup dry milk powder
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  1. In a blender or food processor, combine sugar, powdered creamer, milk powder and cocoa powder. Mix well, and store in an airtight container.
  2. To serve, put 2 to 3 tablespoons of powder in a mug, fill with hot water, and stir.

Instant Hot Chocolate

If you want even more convenience, and don't mind splurging for your hot chocolate you can get Hot Chocolate Makers that do the job for you, just like a coffee maker.
